go beacht

go beacht recreates a traditional Irish spiral bag or cliabh (weaving) with reference to an ancient fragment held at the National Museum of Ireland. By recreating an object preserved by an institution, the work restores aliveness to the knowledge embodied by the fragment. Working with cultural objects becomes a labour of repairing ancestral lineages disrupted through colonialisms.

The cliabh uses the spiral form, which is a prominent symbol in Irish culture. The spiral can be understood as a continuation, and like a spiral suggests, the work is an iterative or ongoing unlearning of inherited colonial logics and the messy embodiment of reconnecting.
